The music of SANJOG, MANMAUJI and ANPADH in early 60s followed by a blockbuster year in 1964 with JAHANARA, GAZAL, HAQEEQAT, WOH KAUN THI and in 1966 with MERA SAAYA, Madanji had set high expectations for himself. At the same time, he had to adapt to the different styles of films being made in mid 60s… some with more light situations in romantic, youthful films with requirement of modern and western arrangements that were being used by others, especially the younger new composers who were emerging and attaining success. And yet he retained his signature style based on the situational demands of a film.
PARWANA (1971), was a challenge for Madanji… it had a young cast of Navin Nischol, and Yogita Bali in the lead with the newcomer, Amitabh Bachchan playing a dramatic negative role. Following the appreciation for the poetic HEER RAANJHA, the Kaifi Azmi - Madanji team proved their versatility with the modern score in PARWANA. Madanji had always created blends of traditional melodies with modern treatment way back in 50s and 60s, but in this film all the situations demanded a very young sound.
Kishore Kumar had just made a big resurgence in the playback singing arena, and though many years earlier, he had sung various songs for Madanji in films in which he starred, he sang for Madanji after a long gap. In PARWANA, he sang two songs for the hero. Of these, the solo, ‘Simti Si Sharmayi Si’ became popular at that time, and is appreciated even today. Rafi Saab sang for Amitabh Bachchan in the film, with a haunting sad solo. In the film this song was blended with another Kishoreda solo ‘Yun Na Sharma’ based on the situation, but they are actually different songs recorded individually.
While Kishoreda sang two solos for the hero, one romantic duet was sung by Rafi Saab with Ashaji… ‘Jis Din Se Maine’ a modern melody with unique modern arrangement too, the guitar played by ace guitarist – singer, Bhupinder. The song was filmed, but removed immediately after the film released due to the pace of the film... so the original visual is now not available.
While all the other songs were modern, a stage-based dance was a classical based presentation. Madanji used the voice of Parveen Sultana, the well-known classical singer, for the first time... she accompanied Ashaji in this female duet.
