MILESTONE FILMS OF MADAN MOHANJI – JAHANARA (1964)
After SANJOG, MANMAUJI and ANPADH as musically appreciated films in 1961/62, Madanji had a musically marvelous year in 1964. He had 8 releases and each of the films had a memorable score. Each very different from each other, with a variety of songs, many of which are still loved. In fact, 1964 is considered the most significant year in his career where he proved his versatility as well as composing prowess.
JAHANARA, was the most important of all these films. it was a follow-up to the big Mughal history-based films, with tremendous scope for music. Madanji wished to bring Talat Mahmood back to sing 3 solos and one duet after a gap of few years. The makers and Madanji almost had a fall out on this matter and Madanji almost gave up the project. They gave in to his conviction and it was much appreciated by music lovers. The film was produced by actor Om Prakash and directed by Vinod Kumar, with Mala Sinha and Bharat Bhushan, in lead roles, supported by Minoo Mumtaz, Prithviraj Kapoor and Om Prakash. There were great expectations from the film, but it flopped badly and was out of cinemas in no time, resulting in cancelled records and thus only radio play for some songs. Madanji was heartbroken at this debacle. Apart from the failure of the film he also did not get adequate appreciation for what he considered one of his finest soundtracks.
