MILESTONE FILMS OF MADAN MOHANJI - DULHAN EK RAAT KI (1966)
With the scores of SANJOG, MANMAUJI and ANPADH in early 60s followed by a blockbuster year in 1964 with JAHANARA, GAZAL, HAQEEQAT, WOH KAUN THI and in 1966 with MERA SAAYA, Madanji had set high expectations for himself. At the same time, he had to adapt to the different styles of films being made in mid 60s. some with more light situations in romantic, youthful films.
Yet he never gave up his signature style of classical based songs embellished with sitar by Rais Khan.
1966 also saw the release of DULHAN EK RAAT KI the Nutan - Dharmendra starrer, which was a few years in the making and had a delayed release. The black and white film did not get accepted at a time when color films had become the draw. It was removed from theatres within a week.
The film had 9 songs which were appreciated, but could have been more popular had the film been a success. It was one of Madanji’s favorite scores but he was disappointed that his music did not get adequate exposure and acknowledgement. Once again, a versatile score with classical based songs and Indian instruments, as well as a classic qawalli and at same time modern romantic songs with western arrangements and situational songs including a comedy song and a folk based mujra. This score deserved more accolades indeed!
